Joseph J. “Jack” Timmes, Jr., M.D., is a retinal specialist in private practice in Annandale, Virginia. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Timmes received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he also completed postgraduate training in Ophthalmology. He then completed a fellowship in retinal diseases and surgery at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia.

He is Board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  Dr. Timmes was the Chief of Ophthalmology at INOVA Fairfax Hospital from 1994 to 2001. He maintains a clinical faculty position in the Department of Ophthalmology at Georgetown University Medical Center, and has hospital privileges at INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

In 2005, Dr. Timmes established the Virginia Retina Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising public awareness of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, two of the leading causes of severe vision loss in adults throughout the country.

Married to Kitty (Gotkin), a certified Ophthalmic Technologist who also trained at Georgetown University, Dr. Timmes resides in Vienna, Virginia, with his wife and their three dogs: a beagle named Andy, a toy poodle named Shayna, and a papillon named Teddy. Teddy often accompanies Dr. Timmes to the office, where patients also can see some of Dr. Timmes’ scale model airplanes. Kitty and Jack enjoy golf, socializing with friends, spending time at the beach, reading and traveling.

Dr. Timmes is past president of the Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology, and is a former board member of the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology. Professional affiliations include the Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Surgeons, the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retinal Specialists.
